The Impact of Good Kicking
Aim:
The aim of the course is to provide coaches with ideas for improving kicking accuracy and to keep possession. The key to being able to kick well is to have a sound basic technique.
- Identify the correct kicking sequence (head, hands, feet)
- Structure progressive practices/drills to maximize learning
- Display the ability to deliver accurate passing over distance
- Provide match situations with high intensity that promote excellent kicking technique
- Explain how techniques can be executed and examine the point of impact.
Critical learning points
To ensure a player’s impact is effective, there are three critical learning points that they must follow.
- Control of the ball onto the foot
- Acceleration of the lower leg
- Firm foot
Model kicks Players can emulate football stars who are good kicks such as Colm Cooper Brian Cullen and Declan O Sullivan. While these players all have slightly different kicking techniques, the critical elements of kicking – controlling the ball onto the foot, lower leg acceleration and a firm foot at impact – are clearly apparent when watching all these players. Observing good players kicking is a great way to learn
